Chorus School Auditions

The San Francisco Girls Chorus School auditions are held in the summer of each year for girls between the ages of 7 and 15. This year, they will be held on June 16-18, 2017. See below for details. For younger applicants, no previous music experience is required. For older applicants, some experience reading music is necessary. Chorus School rehearsals are held in San Francisco and/or the East Bay.

The ideal candidate for participation in the San Francisco Girls Chorus School is an energetic child possessing the following music attributes that are generally considered requisite for the highest standards of performance in choral music: the aptitude to listen and hear differences in pitch, the ability to match tones with the voice, the capability to imitate rhythms correctly, and an instinct for singing. The girl should cooperate well with others; be able to take verbal and written instruction for improvement, and have the capacity to focus and concentrate. All choristers are accepted on a trial basis.

Upon gaining acceptance into the Chorus School, young singers have the unique opportunity to:

  • Become members of an organization dedicated to the advancement of girls and young women through excellence in music
  • Enjoy the company of over 230 choristers in bi-weekly rehearsals
  • Perform classical, musical theater, and world music under the guidance of professional musicians
  • Study vocal technique and learn sight singing, study skills and music theory
  • Attend a 7-10 day summer music camp
  • Learn to perform with poise and confidence for Bay Area audiences

What are the requirements for acceptance to the Chorus School?
Auditions are open to girls ages 7 through 15. For singers at the younger end of the age range, no previous music background is required. However, successful auditionees must be able to hear and match pitches, follow directions in the audition, be free of hoarseness and other vocal difficulties, and read simple sentences. Older auditionees should have some experience reading music.

What if I can’t afford the tuition?
The Chorus School has an excellent need-based scholarship program, for which we raise funds throughout the year. No matter what your financial situation, we encourage all who are interested to audition: if your daughter has been accepted and you need assistance, you may apply for a tuition scholarship.

I live in the East Bay. Can you tell me about the East Bay program?
The East Bay program meets on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Crowden Music Center, 1475 Rose Street, in Berkeley, from 4 to 6pm. We offer the same curriculum as the San Francisco program with the same Level Directors.
