The San Francisco Girls Chorus and Berkeley Ballet Theater join forces to present Rightfully Ours, a fully-staged choral music and dance co-production featuring 30 dancers and 40 choristers. Inspired by the Centennial of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, and in remembrance of the legacy of those who fought for social and political equity, the program will feature choreographed choral works by six living composers including world premiere performances of two new works by women composers, Angélica Negrón and Aviya Kopelman, commissioned and co-commissioned with the Israel Institute, respectively.

PROGRAM

Sahba Aminikia: Music of Spheres
Carla Kihlstedt: Herring Run
Aviya Kopelman: Belong Not (World Premiere; SFGC Co-Commission with the Israel Institute)
Libby Larsen: The Womanly Song of God
Meredith Monk: Panda Chant
Angélica Negrón: I Shouldn’t Be Up Here (World Premiere; SFGC Commission)
Steve Reich: Clapping Music
Ysaye Barnwell: Wanting Memories

Rightfully Ours is made possible, in part, by generous support from the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation. Rightfully Ours is BARTable.

Berkeley Ballet Theater is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Bay Area dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels with a safe space to ignite curiosity, integrate creativity with physicality, and cultivate a passion for movement. BBT believes that dance is a meaningful experience that inspires individuals, connects communities, and changes our world for the better.

Lead by Artistic Director Robert Dekkers, Berkeley Ballet Theater is the official school of Post:Ballet. BBT provides dancers ages 2-21 with an opportunity to explore their love of dance in a focused and supportive environment through its Pre-Ballet and Youth Divisions. Advanced Youth Division dancers may audition for BBT's Studio Company, a performance ensemble that has collaborated with organizations including Berkeley Symphony, San Francisco Girls Chorus, and Berkeley Art Museum and Performance Film Archive (BAMPFA) to present programs for the broader Bay Area community.
